Services
Record review of clinical, school and treatment files with a written summary of what the records show. Independent evaluation of a child or adult with autism, including functional behavior assessment and adaptive behavior measures where appropriate. Written reports prepared for the court, the mediator or the hearing officer rather than for clinicians. Deposition and trial testimony, in person or by video where permitted. Case consultation for attorneys on what records to request, what questions to ask an opposing expert and how a child’s needs translate into specific provisions. Court-appointed neutral work by agreed order.
Areas served
Based in Palm Beach County with regular work in Broward and Miami-Dade, Jamie serves attorneys and courts throughout Florida. Most record review and consultation is done remotely. She also accepts matters outside Florida and will travel for evaluations, depositions and trial.
Types of cases
Family law, including parenting plans, time-sharing schedules, modification and relocation where a child has autism or another developmental disability. Educational disputes under IDEA and Florida law, including IEP adequacy, failure to conduct a functional behavior assessment and placement. Personal injury and life care planning where autism affects damages. Healthcare and insurance disputes over ABA medical necessity and standard of care. Civil rights, employment and disability discrimination involving an autistic person. Criminal matters where autism bears on competency, confessions or mitigation. Probate and guardianship questions about capacity, undue influence and supported decision-making.
What to look for in an autism expert witness
Look for a clinician who still practices and can speak to current standards, not only to research. Ask whether the expert has run or supervised programs, because standard of care, staffing and treatment fidelity questions depend on that experience. Ask for a sample report and judge whether a layperson could follow it. Ask how the expert handles the records: an expert who requests raw data and graphs rather than summaries will hold up better under cross-examination. And confirm the expert’s role is to describe what the child needs rather than to advocate for one side.
